Cap with square motive Free pattern

You can use Granny Squares to create your very own groovy billed cap!

Designed By:  Farrah for 365 Crochet

Skill Level:  Easy

Yarn:  Bernat Softee Chunky Size 5, approx. 100yds.

Hook:  G/4.0mm

Gauge:  14 sts x 12 rows = 4”

Size:  Adult head, approx 21 inch circumference. (stretchy)

Please do not copy or sell my pattern!  You may link to it, you may sell the finished product, I don't mind, as I did not "invent" the granny square!  Have fun!

First you must make 5 granny squares in the color(s) of your choice.   I altered the granny square pattern a little bit, and used hdcs instead of dcs, because I didn’t want the squares to be too wide.

My colors changed on these rnds:

Rnd1-Tan, Rnd2-White, Rnd3 and 4-Tan, Rnd 5-White, Rnd6-Tan

The pattern for my granny square is as follows:

Ch5, sl st to 1st ch to form a loop

Rnd 1:  ch4, (counts as 1hdc and ch2sp), *3hdc in loop, ch2* repeat 3 times, 2hdc in loop, sl st to 2nd ch of beg ch4.  Ch4, do not turn.

Rnd 2: 3 hdc in first ch2 sp, *(3 hdc, ch2, 3 hdc) in next ch 2 sp. * Repeat 3 times.  2hdc in last ch2 sp. Sl st to 2nd ch of beg ch4. Do not turn.

Rnds 3-6: ch4, (acts as one hdc and ch2sp), from now on work 3hdc in every space between the 3hdc clusters of the previous row. When you get to a corner, you always (3hdc, ch2, 3hdc), this creates a corner.  The last cluster is always 2hdc and connect to ch2 of first ch4 (the first 2 ch acts as one hdc+ 2hdc in the end =3dc cluster) Your square should increase by 3hdc on every side, every time you add a row.

You should have 18 hdc on each side of the square when you’re done.

Now you will sew the squares together.  To save time, you can also slip stitch them together down the sides at the end of each square (That’s what I did) but it will give it a raised seam.  If you want it flat, I suggest sewing it together!

Now your hat looks like a box...  don't worry, it will work itself out the the first time you try it on!

Now you will add the edge and bill!  Attach your yarn to the bottom corner of any of the 4 granny squares.

With right side facing you, ch1.

Rnd 1:  work 80 sc around edge of hat evenly.  (Tip – work 20 sc along each square.  When you made each granny square, there were 18 hdc’s on each side, plus 2chs on the corners.  This equals 20 stitches)  sl st to 1st sc, ch1, turn.

Rnd 2:  Sc in next 18 sts, hdc in next 6 sts, (2dc) in each of the next 14 sts, hdc in next 6 sts, sc in last 36 sts.  Sl st to 1st sc, ch1, turn.

Rnd 3:  Sc in first 37 sts, hdc in next 6 sts, dc in next 26 sts, hdc in next 6 sts, sc in last 19 sts.  Sl st to 1st sc, ch1, turn.

Rnd 4:  Sc in first 20 sts, hdc in next 6 sts, dc in next 24 sts, hdc in next 6 sts, sc in last 38 sts.  Sl st to 1st sc, ch1, turn.

Rnd 5:  Sc in each st around (94sc), sl st to 1st sc.  Fasten off.

Weave in ends.

Sports Hat Patterns Baseball Basketball Soccer Football

Great Idea for the sports hats. There are 4 types of sports hats in this pattern: Baseball hat, Basketball hat,  Soccer hat   and Football hat

Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn
  • Size J or K crochet hook (for adult sized hat)

Gauge:

  • 5 dc = 2 inches
  • 6 rows = 4 inches

Directions:

Beginning at top with main color, ch 5, sl st in first ch to form ring.
Round 1: Ch 3, 12 dc in ring. Join with a sl st in top of ch 3. ch 2 (as the first dc for the next round).
Round 2: 2 dc in each dc around - 24 dc. Join with a sl st. ch 2 (as the first dc for the next round).
Round 3: (dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc) 12 times - 36 dc. Join with a sl st. ch 2 (as the first dc for the next round).
Round 4: (dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc) 12 times - 48 dc. Join with a sl st. ch 2 (as the first dc for the next round).
Rounds 5-12: dc in each dc around. Join with a sl st. ch 2 (as the first dc for each round).

Baseball Hat:
Crochet the first three rows in white yarn. The 4th row is crocheted in the back loops (of the 3rd row) to make the edge of the ball appear more noticeable. Apply the ball pattern using a backstitch (with a contrasting thread).
Basketball Hat:
Crochet the first four rows in yarn that is similar to the color of a basketball... i.e., pale orange. The 5th row is crocheted in the back loops (of the 4th row) to make the edge of the ball appear more noticeable. Apply the ball pattern using a backstitch (with a contrasting thread).
Soccer Ball Hat:
Work up to 1st row in black. Attach white for rows 2 and 3. Row 4 will need 2 extra white stitches worked in to achieve the pattern. (Just do an extra 2dc in the same st on each side. Row 4 is worked with **6 dc in white, then 4dc in black**; then repeat pattern between ** 4 more times. (50 st). Change colors. Row 5 is crocheted in the back loops (of the 4th row) to make the edge of the ball appear more noticeable.
Football Hat:
Follow directions for rows 1-12 using team colors. To make the football (using brown yarn): Row 1: ch7. Sc in 1st ch from hook, hdc in 2nd ch, dc in 3rd ch, hdc in 4th ch, sc in 5th ch... around. Ch where you need a little extra 'give' at the pointy ends of the football to make it lie flat.
Row 2: Sc twice in 1st st, hdc twice in 2nd st, dc twice in 3rd st, hdc twice in 4th st, sc twice in 5th st... around. You may need to omit one or two stitches to make the football lie flat.
Row 3: Follow pattern as for rows 1 and 2, increasing where needed to obtain the football shape. The football on the hat in the photo is about3" x 4". You can pull it into a football shape as you stitch it onto the hat. However, before stitching the football onto the hat, add the 'seam' (+++) to the center of the football by adding backstitches in a contrasting color.

All of the hats can be stitched in any combination of team or favorite colors.
These sample hats were made and donated by Donna Casella.

This pattern works for men too. Here are some views on our male head.

Whiskers and optional white fleck in each eye are sewn on using white yarn (Bernat Softee Chunky) and a yarn needle

Assembly:

The ears can be assembled as ‘upright’ or as ‘floppy’ ears, depending on how you attach them to the top of the hat. The construction of the ears will allow them to stand upright without inserting any other substance inside.

After sewing the pink inner ear into the outer ear shell, I stitch the bottom part of the ears closed (to give some extra shape to the ears).

When stitching the pieces together I stitch between the posts of sc round and the final ss round (it tends to hide the stitches within the work).

Before stitching them to the hat, I count stitches from the middle of the hat to try to ensure that they are evenly placed. You can use bits of yarn to mark placement (or safety pins).
